How to Map a Network Drive in Windows

To map a network drive in Windows, open File Explorer, right-click This PC, choose Map network drive, pick a drive letter, enter the shared folder path as \\server\share, and tick Reconnect at sign-in. You can also do it in one command: net use Z: \\server\share /persistent:yes.

What a mapped drive is

A mapped drive is a drive letter (Z:, S:, and so on) that points to a shared folder on another computer, a server, or a NAS. It behaves like a local drive but the files live on the other device.

Method 1: File Explorer

  1. Open File Explorer and select This PC
  2. Ribbon menu > Map network drive (on Windows 11, the menu)
  3. Choose a drive letter
  4. In Folder, type \\servername\sharename or \\192.168.1.10\share
  5. Tick Reconnect at sign-in to keep it after a restart
  6. Tick Connect using different credentials if the share needs a different username
  7. Click Finish

Method 2: Command line

net use Z: \\server\share /persistent:yes maps it; add /user:DOMAIN\name to specify credentials. net use Z: /delete removes it. net use on its own lists everything currently mapped.

Mapping to a NAS

  • Find the NAS IP address (from the NAS admin page or your router)
  • Create a shared folder and a user account on the NAS with access to it
  • Map \\NAS-IP\foldername and sign in with that NAS account
  • For a small office, give the NAS a fixed IP (a DHCP reservation) so the path does not change

Fix: the drive won’t reconnect or shows a red X

  • Open it once from File Explorer — Windows often shows a red X until the drive is touched
  • Clear a stale saved password in Control Panel > Credential Manager > Windows Credentials, then reconnect
  • If the drive maps but is slow to appear at logon, the PC is reaching the network before the share is ready — common on Wi-Fi; a login script or Group Policy mapping is more reliable
  • If nothing connects, check that File and Printer Sharing and network discovery are on, and that both devices are on the same network

Doing this properly in a business

Map by server name, not IP, so a hardware change does not break every PC. Use Group Policy or a login script to deploy the same drives to everyone, and consider DFS so paths stay stable even when the underlying server moves. We set this up as part of business network setup.

Not directly through File Explorer — that maps per user. Use a login script, a scheduled task, or Group Policy Preferences to map the same drive for everyone.

How do I map the same share on a Mac?

Should I use a drive letter or a UNC path?
