Retail WiFi Network Design: Coverage, Capacity and Segmentation

Good retail WiFi network design is decided before any hardware is bought. The difference between a network that just works and one that generates constant complaints is almost always in the design phase — how coverage, capacity, segmentation and security were planned against the actual store.

Coverage versus capacity

These are different problems. Coverage is whether there is usable signal everywhere you need it. Capacity is whether the network holds up when 200 devices connect at once. A single powerful access point can cover a small store but collapse under load; a busy store needs more APs at lower power, each handling fewer clients. Design for the peak-hour device count, not the floor area alone.

RF planning: density, channels and materials

Retail environments are hostile to radio. Steel racking, refrigeration units, concrete, tile and glass all attenuate or reflect signal. A proper design accounts for:

  • AP density and placement — overlapping cells so a device roams cleanly from one to the next
  • Channel plan — non-overlapping channels, careful 2.4 GHz use, 5 GHz and 6 GHz for capacity
  • Transmit power — tuned down so cells are contained and roaming works, not cranked to maximum
  • Mounting — ceiling-mounted APs, away from metal and ductwork

Segmentation: four networks, one infrastructure

A well-designed store network carries several isolated segments on the same hardware:

  • Payments / POS — locked down, minimal, isolated for PCI-DSS
  • Corporate / staff — scanners, tablets, back office, printers
  • Guest — internet only, client isolation, rate limited
  • IoT / building — cameras, sensors, HVAC, digital signage, kept away from everything else

Segmentation limits how far an incident can spread. A compromised security camera should never be able to reach a card terminal.

Security architecture

Design in WPA3 encryption, 802.1X authentication for staff devices where practical, a firewall policy that only permits traffic each segment actually needs, and wireless intrusion detection to flag rogue or “evil twin” access points. Designing for analytics without crossing a line

Wireless controllers can report footfall, dwell time and repeat visits from devices probing for Wi-Fi. This is useful for staffing and layout decisions, but it carries privacy obligations under Canadian privacy law. Design analytics to use aggregated, anonymised data, disclose it in signage and your privacy policy, and avoid tying it to individual identities.

Document it and plan the refresh

A design that only lives in one person’s head is a liability. Record the AP layout, channel plan, VLAN scheme and firewall policy. Plan a hardware refresh cycle — Wi-Fi 6 and 6E are the current baseline, and APs typically have a five-to-seven year useful life before they hold the network back.

What is the biggest mistake in retail WiFi design?

Designing for coverage only and ignoring capacity, then putting POS on the same flat network as guests. Both are decided at the design stage and expensive to fix afterwards.

How is design different from installation?

Design decides how many APs, where, on which channels, and how the network is segmented and secured. Installation is executing that plan. A poor design cannot be rescued by good installation.
